Suriname leader names commission to
negotiate mine deal with US gold
PARAMARIBO, Suriname — Suriname President Desi Bouterse has named a commission that will try to negotiate a deal for one of the world’s largest gold mining companies to begin a mine project in the undeveloped South American nation.
The seven-member panel announced Saturday will be negotiating with U.S.-based Newmont
Newmont says the company hopes to see a deal worked out before the end of the year, and says it could begin work next year.
The Denver-based gold producer already has one mining contract with Suriname’s government and has been working on that project since 2004.
